The government has empowered its new gambling regulator with an impressive arsenal of tools, including the direct authority to block payment transactions and pull the plug on unlicensed advertising. This isn't just about control; it is a calculated move to transition from a long-standing monopoly to a competitive, multi-license market that prioritizes player safety without stifling growth.
Over in South America, the Brazilian market is proving that the initial "gold rush" phase is evolving into something much more professional. SOFTSWISS recently looked back at their first year in the country and noted that while the potential is massive, success now requires a much more nuanced approach to local taxes and player preferences. For operators, the lesson of January is clear: you can no longer simply "copy-paste" a European strategy into Brazil and expect it to work.

The nomination window is set to close on February 15, and this month we learned of four new categories designed to reflect the evolving industry culture: Woman Leader of the Year, Rising Star in Responsible Gambling, Young Changemaker Award, and Industry Culture Shaper. Winners will be determined by a sophisticated 50/50 split between public voting, which opens on March 1, and an expert panel of judges featuring prominent figures from EveryMatrix and NEXT.io.
The highlight of the month was the massive industry gathering in Spain, where ICE Barcelona and iGB Affiliate Barcelona took place concurrently from January 19 to 21 at the Fira Gran Via. This co-located format turned the city into a global gaming capital, attracting a record-breaking combined attendance of over 56,000 unique visitors from 180 countries. While ICE focused on C-level networking and the debut of over 25,000 product launches in the new Hall 1, iGB Affiliate occupied Hall 8 with over 200 exhibitors, specifically targeting trust-based partnerships and lead generation tech.
Software providers and new releases
In the realm of game development, Galaxsys has started the year with a significant victory. Their popular title, Maestro, received a Game of the Year special recognition at the European iGaming Awards 2026 on January 19. The judges praised the game for its innovative mechanics and its ability to provide long-term value to operators, marking a proud moment for the studio as it continues to focus on building products that deliver consistent results for partners.
Bragg Gaming Group, through its Indigo Magic studio, has launched two distinct titles this month. Fortune Babies Harmony is a medium-volatility 5x3 slot with 25 paylines and a default RTP of 96.53%.
